Collection: Winter products For Bees

Candy Board

A candy board is a device used to provide extra food for bees during the winter. It is typically a board filled with hardened sugar syrup or solid sugar, placed on top of the hive. The purposes of a candy board include:

  • Additional Food Source: In winter, bees may not be able to forage for nectar, so they need extra sugar to survive. A candy board provides an easily accessible source of sugar for the bees.
  • Preventing Starvation: Even if a hive has enough honey stores, bees might not be able to move to those stores during extreme cold. A candy board placed on top of the hive allows bees to access food more easily.

Quilt Box

A quilt box is a device used for insulation and moisture control, typically placed on top of the hive. The purposes of a quilt box include:

  • Insulation: A quilt box usually consists of a box filled with insulating materials that help retain warmth inside the hive and prevent heat loss.
  • Moisture Control: The filling materials in a quilt box (such as wood shavings, straw, or sawdust) can absorb moisture from inside the hive, preventing moisture buildup and reducing the risk of mold and other moisture-related issues.

How to Use

  1. Candy Board: Place the candy board on top of the hive frames, making sure bees can access it through the inner cover.
  2. Quilt Box: Place the quilt box between the top frames and the outer cover, ensuring it fits snugly with the rest of the hive to maximize its insulating and moisture-controlling effects.
